Cozy up at home for unexpected stories and virtual experiences for the whole family during winter break. Join us online for craft activities, wintery storytimes, a cooking demo, and more.

Make-at-Home Crafts
Make your own Hessian cap or learn to make a colorful historically inspired ornament, inspired by 18th-century window displays featuring painted scenes that were illuminated with candlelight from behind.

Digital Discovery Cart: Hessians and the 10 Crucial Days
Discover the stories behind the “10 Crucial Days” of the Revolutionary War and the “times that tried men’s souls.” At a Virtual Discovery Cart, explore the objects and stories of the fearsome soldiers known as the Hessians, defeated by Revolutionaries at the Battles of Trenton and Princeton.

Wintery Storytime
On Tuesday, Dec. 29, join us on Facebook for a reading of Gingerbread for Liberty! How a German Baker Helped Win the American Revolution by Mara Rockliff, published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Kids can follow along with the cut-paper illustration on the story of Christopher Ludwick, a German-born American patriot who helped feed General George Washington’s army with gingerbread.

"Crowded History" with the American Philosophical Society
On Saturday, Dec. 26, join us online for a special virtual program about soldier and artist Charles Willson Peale and the Philadelphia Associators, part of our “Crowded History” partnership with the American Philosophical Society.

Living History at Home Cooking Demo: Posset
On New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, tune into our Facebook page as we make a beverage called "posset." This popular wintertime drink includes hot curdled milk and alcohol, and we found many posset cups in the archaeological dig on our site. You may not want to try this one at home!
